For my money, the best looking BMW ever made.

I completely 10000% agree, I had one of those over the summer, but had to get rid of it for “something more practical for school and winter” despite my best efforts to explain to my parents how underbody rustproofing and snow tires work. Probably for the best though, knowing the kids at my high school, it would have eventually gotten dinged, hit, scratched, or damaged in some way or another, had it been my daily. Here it is, with my “more practical” daily, that’s needed more work, has more miles, and gets half the fuel economy of my beloved bimmer.. Wish I could have kept both, but it’s living in a climate controlled garage now somwehere in Rhode Island, it’s new home. Besides, who knows what I’d have done if one of those TRX’s had a puncture...

It’s a great looking car. This one is better looking, though.

I remember being blown away by the looks from the print advertising. The Lancia Beta Coupe was also something that impressed me, but nothing like this car. Wonder why Quentin recommends the autobox ... I drove a 733i with the same manual gearbox and thought it was just fine.

I always thought they looked a bit unbalanced in the metal, but certainly a rival for the 635.

And not a daily driver among them - too pretty to risk wrecking them. And I still prefer the 635. Those seats ....

It's got a lot of nose, but that is the style.

And now I want one even more, after seeing one at cars and coffee in Aliso I have been in love. I just wish examples with 200K were not $6+ grand in my area.

I loved the 5-speed manual in mine, it wasn’t a dogleg ‘box like most of them had because it was an ‘85 model year. What’s even better, though, is the 5-speed my friend has in his 1987; the car that I fell in love with so much I had to have one for my own . It was originally an automatic car, and I believe it’s a Getrag 5-Speed from an M5 that was swapped into it, and it’s incredibly smooth, with a really nice throw, not crazy short, probably 4-5 inches gear to gear. The one thing I liked about mine though, even more than his, was that it would be in 2nd gear, right in the powerband, in corners where my friend has to be in the bottom-mid range of 3rd, or absolutely screaming in second, because he’s got a 3.91 rear diff in his, and mine had the factory 3.46 in it. All in all, a great, reliable, appreciating classic that can be hustled through the corners with ease, and incredible on long journeys that I’d jump on, soon, if I were you. I can tell you right now, I’ll be kicking myself for ever selling mine in 10 years when they’re priced somewhere in the $20-30k range, and I can’t afford one.

It is timeless ... you could release it today with modern mechanicals and safety equipment, and no one would bat an eye.
